The fault is caused when the amount of torque required/requested is mismatched with what can be produced. It is usually caused by an engine issue (programming, wiring, bad MAF sensor, throttle issue, etc). This can be a hard problem to chase down without other codes as well (such as a MAF code, etc. '84 533i sold 5spd.
What makes you think your problem is the MAF sensor? You tried cleaning it I assume? A Break In the Circuit. Your MAF sensor receives power and sends data to the ECU (engine control unit). A break or damage to the wiring harness can cause voltage loss. That, of course, causes your engine computer to log the P0102 code. Make sure to check the connector as well, since it can sometimes deteriorate to a point where pins no longer
The problem is with the service engine light. Here are the OBD and BMW codes when I scan the engine. OBD (BMW) P0102 (8): Mass or Volume Air Flow Circuit Low Input. P0113 (14): Intake Air Temperature Sensor High. P0171 (202): System Too Lean Bank 1. P0174 (203): System Too Lean Bank 2.
